German Shepherd puppy scams: how to tell before you pay

The ad says purebred, the price is tempting and the seller is in a hurry. Before you wire anything: what the market charges, the 5 red flags and what you can verify yourself with any breeder, including us, even from another country.

Short answer Updated 2026-10

A price far below what the breed usually costs in the seller's own country is a red flag consumer agencies name, but on its own it proves nothing. The FTC warns about ads offering purebred puppies for a few hundred dollars when the breed often costs thousands; in the US, Embrace Pet Insurance lists working line puppies at US$ 3,000–6,000+. What separates an honest ad from a scam is what you can verify before paying.

Is a cheap German Shepherd puppy a scam?

Not always, but it is exactly the bait scammers use. The FTC, the US consumer protection agency, describes ads for "purebred puppies for a few hundred dollars" when the breed often costs thousands. Prices differ by country, so compare with the seller's home market: for working lines, Embrace Pet Insurance lists US$ 3,000–6,000+ in the US, and in Brazil price guides put puppies with pedigree at 2,500 to 7,000 Brazilian reais (Pet Caramelo; Patas da Casa). A price far below the seller's own market can mean a mixed-breed puppy, a rushed sale, or a scam.

Buying from abroad raises the stakes. You cannot drive over to see the litter, so the seller's documents, payment method and transport quote are all you have to judge.

What do you lose when the ad is a scam?

Money, and usually for good. The Better Business Bureau (BBB), the North American consumer organization, received 2,278 pet scam reports in 2024, with a median loss of US$ 680, and 1,632 through the end of the third quarter of 2025, with a median loss of US$ 600. The study names German Shepherds among the breeds most in demand in that market.

The FTC explains why the money vanishes: scammers ask for payment up front by gift card, payment app, cryptocurrency or wire transfer, methods where it is hard to get money back.

The second loss is the wrong puppy: a dog without the breed, health or registration you paid for. That is why a verifiable pedigree matters as much as the price.

The 5 red flags of a puppy scam

One sign alone does not prove a scam, but it is reason enough to stop before paying and check everything. The table shows what each source flags and how to check.

What to verify before you pay

Five checks fit into one afternoon and apply to any seller, including us.

  1. Search the seller's nameThe FTC suggests searching the seller or kennel name with words like "review", "scam" and "complaint".
  2. Check the registration with the registryThe ALKC, the Brazilian registry, publishes public kennel and microchip lookups on its site, plus the path to authenticate a pedigree. Check the number there, not on a file the seller sent you.
  3. Run a reverse image searchThe BBB recommends searching the ad photos in image search engines: photos stolen from another kennel are a common sign.
  4. Pay only the sellerAvoid the payment methods the FTC flags. In Brazil, the Santa Catarina Civil Police advise checking that the receiving account belongs to the seller.
  5. Get everything in writingA contract listing what is included, the total price and the transport cost before any payment. A new fee after the first payment is a red flag (BBB).

When this guide is not enough

  • A high price is not a guarantee. Scammers also post expensive ads, sometimes copying a real kennel's name. Verify at any price.
  • If your budget does not reach a puppy with a verifiable pedigree, the honest options are adopting, as the FTC itself suggests, or waiting and saving, not accepting a "pedigree" that cannot be checked.
  • If you want to see the puppy in person before deciding, a breeder near you may be a better choice than any distant kennel, including ours.
  • Our own floor is below US breeders' prices because it is a Brazilian breeder's price: in Brazil the standard cross is from R$ 5.000 and the elite cross from R$ 7.000, both inside the local range for puppies with pedigree. Transport is extra, quoted in writing before any deposit. Apply every other check in this guide to us too.

How Canil Gelbes Wasser sells

At Canil Gelbes Wasser, in Chapecó, Brazil, we have bred working line German Shepherds since 2001. What you can check in our process: joining the waiting list is free, with no cost and no commitment. When the litter is born, list order is pick order, and a 1/3 deposit confirms the chosen puppy, with a written contract; the deposit is non-refundable if you withdraw after paying it. Transport costs are the buyer's responsibility, quoted in writing before any deposit.

The breeding dogs' registrations and pedigrees are published on the breeding dogs page (in Portuguese), starting with the sire of both crosses, Odin Holly's Land (CBPA SP/42792). The standard cross is from US$ 1,500 (Americas) / € 1,300 (Europe) and the elite cross from US$ 2,000 / € 1,750. The final price may vary by puppy, litter and demand. How a puppy reaches another country is in international delivery.

How we built this guide

We opened every source in 2026-10: the FTC alert, the Better Business Bureau study, the ALKC registry site, the Santa Catarina Civil Police guide and the price reference already used on this site. The questions come from real searches that reach us through Google and Bing.

Deliberately left out: numbers without a method (such as "80% of ads are fake"), classified-ad asking prices treated as market prices, and legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cheap German Shepherd puppy always a scam?

No, but a price far below what the breed costs in the seller's own country is a red flag the FTC and the BBB name. In the US, Embrace Pet Insurance lists working line puppies at US$ 3,000–6,000+; in Brazil, puppies with pedigree run 2,500 to 7,000 Brazilian reais. Check the registration with the registry and the payment account before paying anything.

How do I know if a German Shepherd breeder is legitimate?

Search the breeder name with words like scam and complaint, check the registration number with the registry that issued the pedigree, run a reverse image search on the photos and ask for a contract and the full cost in writing before paying. A serious breeder waits while you check.

Which payment methods are risky when buying a puppy?

The FTC warns about paying up front by gift card, payment app, cryptocurrency or wire transfer, because it is hard to get the money back. Pay only an account in the seller name, after checking the documents and signing a written contract.

Are extra shipping or vaccine fees after payment a scam sign?

Yes, it is one of the most common signs, according to the Better Business Bureau: after the first payment, new fees appear for crates, vaccinations or shipping. Transport should be quoted in writing before any deposit. If a new fee appears afterwards, stop and verify before paying again.

How can I tell if a German Shepherd puppy is purebred?

The document that proves the ancestry is the pedigree, and it only counts if the number is checked with the registry that issued it, such as the ALKC, which has public lookups on its own site. An ad that promises purebred without a registration number you can check has no way to prove the breed.

What should I do if I was scammed buying a puppy?

Do not pay any further fee, keep receipts, messages and the ad, tell your bank or payment provider right away and report it. In the US, the FTC takes reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; other countries have their own police and consumer channels.
